“You shall be free indeed…”

Independence Day is a reminder of the long-standing struggle spanning nearly two centuries of British rule and the sacrifices made to achieve freedom. On the eve of India's independence, Nehru said this in the Parliament House:

"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance." Yes, the long-suppressed soul of the nation found utterance on that day!

Even every human soul, just like the soul of a nation, thrives for freedom. But are we truly free? There are so many things that we allow in our lives that keep us imprisoned. It may be our wealth or material possessions, our career, unhealthy relationships, alcohol, or even food. Sadly, many things we choose for our comfort and pleasure end up enslaving us and leaving us feeling worse than before.

Jesus Christ said, “If I make you free, you shall be free indeed.” The freedom which Christ proclaimed was the real freedom, for it was the freedom of true life delivered from the bondage of sin and brought man into union with God. Man can contemplate the almighty God and eternity through the knowledge of the truth revealed through Christ, and in that there is real freedom that no power can restrain.
